The two battles to be the UCI BMX Racing World Cup champions will go to the wire in both the men’s and women’s Elite events after more tight finishes in Argentina.
The quest to be men’s champion is between two Frenchmen, and for the second time this weekend in Santiago del Estero it was Romain Mahieu who beat Joris Daudet.
This time Daudet was relegated to last place for an infringement, meaning Mahieu moves above Daudet in the standings with just two rounds to go and the series on a knife edge.
Mahieu was delighted with his weekend’s work in Argentina saying:
“It’s my first win of the year on a Sunday. I usually only win on Saturday! So it’s nice to put everything together on both days.”
In the women’s Elite event, the epic contest between Saya Sakakibara and Bethany Shriever continued. The Australian rider beat Britain’s Olympic Champion in round eight to extend her small lead in the overall standings going into the last two rounds.
“Bethany and I were really close, especially in that semi-final, it was who could come out of the gate first and I knew if I could I’d be really confident I could do a clean lap,” said Sakakibara. Axelle Etienne was third on yet another strong weekend for French BMX riders.
In the Men Under 23 final Argentina’s Thomas Maturano was denied a sensational double by a tiny margin after winning round seven on Saturday. This time the local favourite narrowly lost out to Mateo Colsenet, with Czech rider Marek Neuzil third. It was Frenchman Colsenet’s elusive first World Cup win of the season.
In the Women’s Under 23 final French world champion Tessa Martinez continued to dominate her category with another victory, holding off Australian Isabell May and American Mckenzie Gayheart, while Saturday’s round seven winner Ava Corley crashed this time.
The final two rounds also take place at Santiago del Estero (Friday, October 13 and Saturday 14), in what promises to be a thrilling final to the UCI BMX Racing World Cup season.
